Resmed S9 Enhanced AutoSet
ResMed is a world leading manufacturer of CPAP therapy
devices and accessories incorporating the finest technology
available. The S9 Enhanced AutoSet incorporates
special technology that is capable of making the difference
between OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea) and CSA (Central Sleep
Apnea). The device intelligently differentiates between the
two types of apneas and delivers optimum therapy to the
mask.
Patients can now enjoy the most comfortable and efficient
therapy at the lowest pressures. Thus, therapy becomes even
more like natural breathing, and patients can become quickly
compliant with therapy using the S9 Enhanced AutoSet
algorithm.
The S9 series with Enhanced AutoSet algorithm adjust CPAP
pressure dynamically, to deliver pressure that is most
comfortable for the patient to breathe in. Enhanced AutoSet
technology monitors the patient’s breathing cycle on a
breath by breath basis, and is capable of delivering the
most efficient therapy at the lowest possible therapeutic
pressures.
The S9 Enhanced AutoSet algorithm intelligently
detects the difference between an open and a closed airway
and thus it delivers the most custom tailored CPAP therapy.
In order to identify whether the patient’s airways are open
or closed during an apnea episode, the device uses FOT-
Forced Oscillation Technique.
Through this intelligent technology, the device is capable
of adding small pressure oscillations to the pressure that
is currently set on the device. Then, the CSA algorithm will
analyze data from the flow and pressure that results, in
order to detect whether the patient’s airway is closed or
open. This is how CSA detection works with S9 Enhanced
AutoSet algorithms, and this is what makes the S9
AutoSet and S9 Elite CPAP devices so different from other
machines within the same range.
OSA vs. CSA Important Guide
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) occurs when the airway is
limited/ blocked while sleeping. Patients diagnosed with OSA
can encounter even hundreds of such apnea episodes during
one night. When the patient cannot breathe because of an
obstructed airway, the oxygen levels within the blood will
drop and the blood pressure increases - exposing the patient
to real health dangers. However, when the right CPAP sleep
therapy device is used, apnea episodes will not occur
anymore, since the airways are maintained open and
therapeutic quality oxygen is constantly delivered.
Central Sleep Apnea (CSA) occurs in cases when the brain of
the patient will give up sending the right signal to the
muscles that are in full control of breathing. During CSA
episodes, the patient can stop breathing for even up to 30
seconds, time during which the blood oxygen saturation drops
and this exposes the patient to certain health hazards.
There are basically two different breathing disorders
strongly linked to Central Sleep Apnea, and these are
Periodic Breathing and Cheyne-Stokes respiration. During a
CSA episode, even though the airways are open, airflow
(breathing process) is not present. Clinicians highly
recommend using the most intelligent and efficient sleep
therapy devices for patients struggling with OSA or CSA.
The intelligent S9 Enhanced AutoSet algorithm is
fully capable of making the difference between OSA and CSA
and instantly deliver the required type of pressure and
oxygen therapy.
