Had a stroke and now Neuro wants a sleep study. On Standard medicare and sleep med doctor does sleep studies in his office in Sugar Land. Concerned that Medicare will veto this. I had a sleep study done 8 years ago and did not understand how to use the Resmed heavy c-pak so that has been in my closet for years. It is noisy and big and I refuse to use this one. Are there newer and less noisy ones on the market now? I was not on medicare then. Insurance paid. Thanks
The new generation of CPAP machines are totally silent and if you can get an Auto PAP very comfortable. The issue with Medicare or any insurance is that your choice of machines is limited to what the company billing your carrier is willing to provide in the current low reimbursement market. In my opinion the two best machines to shoot for, in not order, are the Philips Respironics DreamStation Auto and the ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet. Good luck with your new sleep study.
Thank YOu. I will be on the phone tomorrow calling Medicare to make sure they pay for the study. I am having great difficult with sleep since the stroke. Have a new CPAK machine in my closet that is almost 10 years old that is a disaster. So noisy and heavy and wore only a few times. I cannot even lift it now. )-: Will not have the CPAK done if I get another one like I have in the closet.
Would like to know if you have any crap machines that blow cool air. I run hot and having warm air blown at me, makes me just rip the mask back off.
If you are using a heated humidifier you might try to turn it off so that there is no heat. The system them will blow room temp. air. There is not way to have cooler air than room temp.
Sure there is. put distilled water in the refrigerator ahead of time and add to your machine just before bedtime. It will at least allow you to fall asleep to cooler air. In the fall and winter just leave the window open and the heated humidifier off. Your nose will get chilled I assure you
I tried a cpap machine in a sleep study 20 years ago and couldn’t wear the mask, so I had the surgery. Now my doctor is telling me I may have sleep apnea again. Are there any machines with masks that aren’t so bulky?
It’s your lucky day. The machines today are silent and the mask as low profile. Today you are able to read or watch TV with the mask on and they are significantly more comfortable that the mast from 20 years ago. The old CPAP machine sound like Dart Vader today they do not. You need to go in and look at the new machines and mask and then get your CPAP therapy going. Your health and life depend upon it.
how many events per hour is acceptable?
Medical standards is and AHI of 5 or less is normal. That being said if you are using a top of the line machine such as the ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet or the Respironics DreamStation Auto CPAP Machine you should get a number that is significantly less.
I would like to no were to get one .

i have used resmed, repironics an hp cpap machines. I am now on the road permanent and power is thru 1000wt inverter. Sadly lost all in a fire so need to start again. What is best machine that can be serviced within australia as its changed so much in past 30yrs.
That’s an easy question. If in Australia purchase the machine from Australia. ResMed is an Australian company and is fully supported in Australia. Please know that Philips Respironics is widely distributed in Australia so either brand will serve you well.
Question, just got a ResMed AirSense 10 with the pressure set for 14. But am looking to get a second smaller for traveling. I was looking at the mini, however, the Doc’s office said that the mini can handle that pressure for more then a few days. If that is the case (and if not let me know), what is a good machine to look at, as that second small travel machine?
Thanks,
Howard
The AirMini is a great machine. Many people including myself use it as our full time machine. The AIrMini can be set for any pressure up to 20 cm H2O and can run at that pressure day in and day out. Not sure where your physician got that information but he/she is totally not right.
