CPAP
Beginning in the 1930’s devices that
provided continuous airway pressure were first described. It
was not until the 1980’s that the first Continuous Positive
Airway Pressure (CPAP) system, as we know it, was developed.
Initially a CPAP machine was used as a treatment therapy for
individuals suffering from sleep apnea. This would include a
machine that supplies constant and steady air pressure, a hose
and a mask or nose piece.
Sleep apnea or obstructive sleep
apnea occurs when the upper airway become narrow as the muscles
relax during sleep. This can reduce oxygen in the blood and
causes arousal from sleep. The results are such that you may
experience snoring, insomnia and general fatigue. Snoring and
sleep apnea are common sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) that
affect your sleep, health and quality of life.
The CPAP machine stops this problem
by delivering a stream of compressed air via a hose to a nasal
pillow, nose mask or full-face mask, splinting the airway
(keeping it open under pressure) so that unobstructive
breathing becomes possible, reducing and/or preventing apneas
and hypopneas. It is the air pressure and not the movement of
air that prevents the apnea; allowing you to finally sleep
restfully.
Given that sleep apnea is usually a
chronic health issue that does not simply go away, ongoing care
through the use of a CPAP is usually needed. Sleeprestully.com
